Your body is not broken

When presented with chronic health issues, most people make the mistake of chasing a solution to fix their problem. But what if there is no problem in the first place? What if the presentation of symptoms is your body trying to help you and communicate with you? In that case the body would be simply doing its job, and your job in response would be to listen to what the body is communicating it needs. 


This misunderstanding of how the body works costs people time, money and their health, because instead of focusing on restoring health to the body, they are focused on the dis ease. And they are seeing the symptoms as a problem to get rid. This leaves people feeling like they don’t have control over their health and like their dis ease is something that just happened to them. It leaves people dependent on external fixes or false solutions. And then when people decide they want to heal naturally or heal from the root… they often find themselves on an endless journey of protocols, specialists, cleanses and supplements. They think “if I just find the right person…the right protocol…I’ll be healed.”

But your body isn’t failing you. And your healing does not depend on the next trending health “cure.” Your body just needs you to listen, slow down, and provide the foundations of health that let the body repair and create energy efficiently and safely. Real healing is more often not about doing more, but about creating the conditions where the body can do its job optimally.

What Changes when you stop trying to fix it

I used to be this person- hopping from holistic health practitioner to doctor, hoping and praying that this acupuncture protocol, this herbal formula, this perfect supplement recommendation, this round of testing, would be the thing to save me…. spoiler alert—none of them did! I spent years and years and countless energy and money looking for solutions to my chronic strep throat, scarily hemorrhaging periods, chronic pain, chronic low grade fever and extreme anxiety. 

My rock bottom with my health was after years of dealing with these health issues that were seemingly just getting worse..when I was 26 and I had the worst experience having the flu…I was so so sick. And then that then turned into pneumonia….

I had recently graduated from studying Chinese medicine and embarking on building my own practice as an acupuncturist. I remember feeling so sick, having to cancel my schedule for the week (again) and thinking to myself- Okay this is pathetic. Pneumonia is what happens to weak elderly people, not supposedly a young, vibrant health professional. How am I supposed to help other people with their health when I myself am chronically ill?  


This realization was a long time coming for me, and it was in this rock bottom moment that I came to, and realized that it was time to stop chasing for answers that didn’t exist outside of myself. I had to make peace with my body and finally listen to it. It was not an overnight fix, but through my lifestyle, mindset, nutrition, and most importantly my understanding of health and dis ease, I’m proud to say I was able to resolve all of those issues.


I truly could not be more grateful for that experience and for my education leading up to it, because it ignited a spark in me that would lead me to also help other people heal from the root through simple but foundational principles of health- not by chasing a fix for themselves, but by understanding how their body is already working for them, and how they can start to with with it to feel better.

This shift in understanding—from fixing to listening—is exactly what I now outline inside my Foundations of Vitality course. But first, let me show you what this actually looks like in practice.

Root Causes: reframing what the body is doing when it’s symptomatic 

The body is designed to heal and self regulate itself- so when it’s not doing that- that is informative that it does not have something that it needs, or that there is something damaging it. 

Symptoms aren’t random, they are adaptive responses to chronic stress, depletion, dehydration, dysregulated biological clock, lack of safety, lack of energy, lack of restorative sleep and nutritional deficiencies. 


Your body is SMART. It knows what to do to keep you alive, conserve energy and help you respond to lack and conflict—even when that response feels uncomfortable or inconvenient.


So when I was able to realize that my chronic strep throat, heavy bleeding, tension and anxiety were actually my body trying to help me, everything changed. Instead of constantly thinking, "Ugh, what is wrong with me!? This isn't normal. How do I get rid of this?? I began asking - “What is my body responding to? How am I contributing to this?” And that sense of agency and loving but radical responsibility is what set me free from my chronic health symptoms and allowed me to cultivate the abundant health I have today.


Why listening comes before resolving


Look, nobody wants to feel sick and tired, but we are all responsible for our own suffering and we are the ones who keep ourselves stuck- which is great news because that means that you are also the one that can free yourself. Before you effectively change anything about your state of health, you have to understand that there is nothing wrong with you, and to approach your health from a place of restoring health and function, not eradicating dis ease. As long as you’re chasing getting rid of your symptoms rather than asking and addressing why they are there in the first place, you will be on an endless chase.


You have to stop chasing protocols and start with the foundations of health. Without the basic functions of the body working optimally (detoxification, repair, energy production), nothing else matters and it’s like trying to save a sinking ship by using a teacup to remove the water rather than fixing the patch. 


Rather than asking how can I get rid of this pain point? Start to ask- “What my body is responding too? What conditions are not being met in order for my body to do its job?”
